The Confidence Conundrum

Confidence. What a loaded word. We all want it. We crave it. But few of us would say we possess it.

When we think of confidence, we think of lots of things. Things like: appearance, success, status, social skills, girl-power, poise and self-esteem. Not bad things. But may I ask a question? What about the confidence that doesn't come from us? What about the confidence that can withstand a horrid breakout, failed career, broken relationship, disobedient child, massive weight gain, or lost home? The confidence that comes from... following God? Do we ever ponder this? When we follow God, even when we don't want to, I might add - it changes us. Like, permanently. It produces in us what the bible calls a "quiet confidence." What exactly is this quiet confidence? It's the kind of confidence that isn't affected by our highs or our lows. The kind that of confidence that outlives both our successes AND our failures. The kind of confidence that lasts forever. {Isaiah 32:17 - my paraphrase} Let's consider this my loves. Where do we find our confidence? Where do we find our value? Identity? Strength? Worth? Good feels??? Because if we aren't finding our confidence in a source that doesn't ever change, oh are we in for a road of yuck. (Trust me!! I know!) Does this mean we take on a "woe is me" attitude and reject all the good things that we do possess/feel? No.

It's about checking our perspective. Surrendering it to God. Daily. Asking him to help us in the areas that we struggle by placing too much worth where we shouldn't. That step alone will make a world of difference. Give it a try. Let me know how it goes. "Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him."
